What Is Internal Medicine?

Internal medicine is a medical specialty focused on adult medicine, provided by caregivers with specific training focusing on prevention and treatment of adult diseases. Internal medicine doctors, otherwise known as internists, are often called on to treat chronic illnesses. They also focus on disease prevention and wellness.

Doctors of internal medicine often collaborate with other specialists such as surgeons or cardiologists to coordinate a patient's care and manage medical problems associated with that care.

WakeMed Physician Practices is strongly committed to the health and safety of our patients. Our goal is to protect our patients from life-threatening diseases by requiring that all of our patients meet the minimum vaccination requirements published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

Designation and Accreditation

Our Primary Care practices have achieved the Patient-Center Medical Home Designation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The patient-centered medical home is a model of care that puts patients at the forefront of care.
