Program: Residency 2021 - 2022

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA — PREREQUISITES FOR CHAPLAIN RESIDENTS

  • A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • The successful completion of at least one unit of ACPE accredited CPE
  • Ordination or authorization to function in ministry by one’s faith community
  • Completed application, including a fee of $25.00 (Payable to WakeMed Dept. of Spiritual Care)
  • ACPE Admissions Interview with CPE supervisory staff
  • Dates: August 2021 – August 2022
  • Positions Available: 6
  • Prerequisites: Master’s Degree from an accredited theological seminary, college or university; Successful completion of at least one unit of accredited CPE
  • Tuition: $300.00 per unit (3 CPE units for the year)
  • Stipend: Yes, approximately $35,000
  • Benefits: Medical Insurance, Life Insurance, free parking, 26 paid days off, on-call meal tickets, and pharmacy discounts
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday work schedule, 8:00am – 4:30pm, plus on-call rotations

UNIT REQUIREMENTS:

  • 20 hours weekly on clinical areas
  • On-call rotations, usually 4 – 6 twelve hour shifts per month (will receive flex time)
  • Completion of Educational Requirements

Additional Information:

  • Students seeking academic course credit for CPE should contact their seminary / divinity school registrar for information and guidance.
  • Tuition of $300 per unit is payable to WakeMed Department of Spiritual Care. A limited number of tuition scholarships are available.
  • Applications are reviewed as they are received with some consideration given to group composition. Interested students are encouraged to apply early.
  • The Residency program consists of three units of CPE over the one year period.

Program: 2021 Spring Intern Unit — Hospital Based & Urban Ministry - January 11 to May 10, 2021

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA – PREREQUISITES FOR INTERNS

  • Bachelor's degree is required and interns often have completed at least one year of theological school
  • Ordination or authorization to function in ministry by one’s faith community
  • Ministry involvement or experience as clergy or laity
  • Completed application, including application fee of $25.00 (cash, check or money order payable to WakeMed Dept. of Spiritual Care)
  • ACPE Admissions Interview with CPE supervisory staff
  • Dates: January 11 – May 10, 2021
  • Tuition: $ 450.00
  • Benefits: On-call meal tickets, pharmacy discounts, free parking
  • Schedule: Mondays (8am – 1:00pm) and Tuesdays (8am – 12:00pm)

UNIT REQUIREMENTS:

  • On-call rotations that require a 12-hour stay in the hospital (usually 12 – 15 per unit). Number of days between on calls depend on the total number of Chaplains in the group and can be as often as (but no more than) every 6 to 10 days
  • Assistance with Spiritual Care Consults /Needs and on-call assistance (a 6-hour shift on Saturday or Sunday, on a rotating basis)
  • 12 – 15 hours weekly on clinical area / urban ministry site (in addition to on-call shifts and weekend consults / assist rotationsChaplain interns are paid $100 for each 12-hour on-call shift.

Program: 2021 Summer Intern Unit — Hospital Based & Urban Ministry - May 24 to August 6, 2021

  • Ordination or authorization to function in ministry by one’s faith community
  • Ministry involvement or experience as clergy or laity
  • Completed application, including application fee of $25.00 (cash, check or money order payable to WakeMed Dept. of Spiritual Care)
  • ACPE Admissions Interview with CPE supervisory staff
  • Dates: May 24 – August 6, 2021
  • Tuition: $ 450.00
  • Benefits: On-call meal tickets, pharmacy discounts, free parking

UNIT REQUIREMENTS:

  • An 11 Week unit which meets Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 4:30pm
  • Individual Supervision
    • Scheduled weekly at a time negotiated by you and your supervisor
  • On-Calls that require a 12-hour stay in the hospital (usually 6 – 8 per unit)
    • Chaplain interns are paid $100 for each 12 hour shift
  • On-Calls may be assigned on a weekday or weekend
    • Number of days between on calls depend on the total number of Chaplains in the group and can be as often as (but no more than) every 6 to 10 days
  • Weekend Assistance with Spiritual Care Consults and Needs as assigned
    • (6 hours per shift; at least 2 shifts per unit on Saturdays or Sundays)
  • Clinical area in the hospital that is your “parish”
    • You are responsible for ministry to the patients, their families, and the staff in your assigned clinical area(s)
    • You are to spend 18 – 20 hours a week in your assigned clinical area
