Testing

Do you think you have COVID-19?

COVID symptoms include chills, fever greater than or equal to 100 degrees Fahrenheit and/or a new cough, sore throat or shortness of breath not related to allergies.  If you think you have COVID-19, go to your WakeMed MyChart account and click on “Appointments” at the top of your screen.  Then, click on “COVID-19 Screening Test” and answer the questions.  If it is determined that you would benefit from testing, you will be prompted to schedule a test and you will receive further instructions. 

At this time we are only testing individuals, ages 6 and over, who are experiencing symptoms or who have had a known exposure to a COVID-positive person.  We are also testing patients who are scheduled for a procedure at WakeMed. Testing for children is available through our partner, PM Pediatrics.

If you do not have a WakeMed MyChart account, download the WakeMed MyChart app on your phone by visiting the Apple App Store or Google Play.  You can also sign up online at www.mychart.wakemed.org.  If you do not choose to sign up for WakeMed MyChart, you can go to a WakeMed Urgent Care location, call your primary care physician or go to a pharmacy.

Those with Severe Symptoms

For those with severe symptoms—particularly with significant difficulty breathing—should go to the emergency department or call 911.  Please note that emergency departments will not test you without an evaluation by an emergency department provider. Emergency departments do not accept walk-ins for testing. 

 

Test Results

To get your test results, log into WakeMed MyChart and select the test result icon and follow the instructions.  If you do not have WakeMed MyChart, you will receive a phone call from WakeMed when your results are available. Results may take up to 72 hours for processing.

If you have new or returning symptoms and need medical assistance, please either call your primary care provider or visit an urgent care or emergency department and let them know you have been tested for COVID but have not yet received your results.  If you need a primary care physician, please call 919-350-9100.
